Good Stuff On Sale & Other Good Stuff

19 Mar

Early on I mentioned that I would sometimes let you know about good deals.

If you are interested in losing weight or you drink diet soda or you would like to switch but you’re concerned about aspartame, do you know about stevia?

Stevia is a natural sweetner. Google it! Here’s a link to start with:

Stevia.com

Vons finally has the soda made with stevia. It’s called Zevia!

The first thing you should know is that Sprouts and stores like it have had Zevia for a while and it is usually about $5.99 a six-pack when it’s not on sale. So it’s not cheap. I think Jimbo’s has it at $6.19.

Right now you can get Zevia at Vons for $3.99 and sometimes they have it for $2.99 if you have a coupon from their circular. Both prices assume you’re a member of Vons club.

My wife’s favorite is grape and mine is root beer.

I also prefer a less sweet soda, so don’t think it’s going to bowl you over with sweetness.

If you’re concerned about aspartame or just want to stop drinking sugary sodas, check out Zevia!

Now for more good stuff, though not necessarily on sale.

Today I’m going to meet a friend at Haggo’s Organic Tacos in Encinitas.

I think I’ve mentioned Reality Changers in a previous post and a fellow tutor from RC went to lunch with me about 5 or 6 weeks ago at Haggo’s.

I’ve lived in the area all my life with a couple small exceptions. When I was two my family moved to Washington and then moved back to the same house in Encinitas when I was three. About 23 years ago I followed my fiancee out to the Imperial Valley for a couple years. Now she’s my wife.

Haggo’s is about a mile from where I lived in Leucadia from age 5 to 13. I’m glad my friend Mike told me about it.

If you like organic or you’re willing to try vegetarian tacos (there are some meat dishes), give Haggo’s a try. It’s an outdoor cafe that’s closed Mondays. The decor (what’s a really low rent word for decor?) is truly the opposite of fancy, but the chef is an actual chef! So far I’ve had two different vegetarian tacos and maybe I’ll have something with meat today.

Your Neighborhood Changes And Grows II

6 Mar

I took the photo above a few minutes ago. Yes. That’s my foot in the picture. I put it there for scale. My foot is, oddly enough, almost exactly a foot long. So you can see how big the aeonium has grown over several months. Here’s a picture of that section of the front yard:

Compare that view with several months ago by visiting my post earlier this week:

Your Neighborhood Changes And Grows (I)

Despite the slightly different view you should be able to notice that change and growth has taken place. It’s not always incredibly obvious and sometimes it doesn’t happen fast but, just like change in our yard, change is taking place in your neighborhood and mine.

Let’s be proactive and make positive change.

What say you?

Helping My Community Through Reality Changers

5 Mar

In April I will start my seventh year of volunteering with Reality Changers.

I was at a regular study on Wednesday nights at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church several years ago and our group decided to go check out Reality Changers. At the time, RC met down the hall from the group of mostly married couples and a few spouses who attended on their own in an effort to understand more about the bible and get to know each other better.

As soon as the Reality Changers presentation was over I realized that RC was the place for me to be on Wednesday nights during the school year. I could see myself helping high school students become the first generation in their family to attend college – though I say I want the students to not only attend, but SUCCEED at college.

If you follow the links below, please read more about Reality Changers and ask yourself questions:

~Who do I know that is a candidate for Reality Changers or College Apps Academy?

~Who do I know that could be an inspirational or educational speaker at Reality Changers in Solana Beach or San Diego?

~Who do I know that would be a good volunteer tutor or who has special knowledge or skills like how to write an excellent college essay or where to find scholarships that not many people know about?

~Who do I know that has the means to donate generously?

~Is it possible that I fall into one or more of the categories above?

Please remember that if you feel that you do not have the financial resources, you can certainly try your hand at tutoring/mentoring. You can call Reality Changers. Check out their website at:

You can also call me to find out about my experience as a tutor at Solana Beach Pres. You will find my phone number here on my Facebook group page:

The only relevant fact that has changed is that we now meet on Monday nights at 6 pm. The first three Mondays I arrive at 5:10 for those students that want to practice public speaking before the main meeting.

Please read over the questions above one more time!

Helpful Link For Your Neighborhood Or Community

1 Mar

After turning 50 yesterday I took some time to be reflective and explore possibilities for improving neighborhoods like mine (currently in San Marcos, CA) and yours.  Below is a link information on Walklive.org that may be of help in building a more successful neighborhood/community or improving one that’s doing well.

There Is Potentially ENORMOUS Long-Term Impact For Your Neighborhood Or Community.

From the website:

Our Mission, Our Focus
The Institute’s vision is to create healthy, connected communities that support active living and that advance opportunities for all people through walkable streets, livable cities and better built environments.

The Institute’s mission is to inspire, teach, connect and support communities in their efforts to improve health and well-being through better built environments.

We inspire by helping communities envision a better future, by sharing examples and success stories and by displaying a personal commitment to the movement.
We teach the benefits of walkability and livability, best practices in designing for active transportation and strategies for successful civic engagement and implementation.
We connect community members and leaders to important resources, engage them in the process, and help them communicate with each other.
We support with ongoing guidance, educational materials and by celebrating successes widely.
The Institute was formed for charitable, educational and scientific purposes to help communities address the negative effects of the built environment on health, safety, social welfare, economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and overall quality of life.

What are your nuts and bolts ideas for things that need improvement in San Marcos or your neighborhood/community?
