What Do You Do On Monday Nights?

6 May

Right now I’m at Reality Changers at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church in Solana Beach, California. Most Monday nights during the school year I am here tutoring.

Tonight I’m observing the learning game that the RC students are playing with the other tutors. And I’m blogging. There are a couple shows I like on Monday nights and I’m sure that my machine is doing a fine job of recording “Defiance” and “Revolution”.

What would you be missing on Monday nights by coming to Solana Beach to tutor high school students? Or you could choose another night if you would rather tutor in San Diego.

It’s not really that hard to do. In my experience, you need to get into the habit. And you have several months to decide if you want to make a commitment because the school year is winding down. But you can visit us to check us out right now!

In April I started my seventh year with Reality Changers in Solana Beach. Time does fly. Now there are students who were freshmen in high school when I arrived who are now in their junior year in college. Claudette is at Syracuse. Daniela is at the University of San Diego. Phylicia is at Columbia and Cindy is at Point Loma Nazarene University. No, they aren’t all female. Luis is at Palomar. Shawn will be graduating soon to UC Berkeley perhaps?

Could you give up watching television on Monday nights? Or fishing? Doing laundry? I don’t know what you would have to move to another time to get here. I only know that it’s worth it. And it’s free to come take a peek at what we do. You can check out the website in the first paragraph and you’re welcome to visit. Give me a call or give Reality Changers a call.

There’s also a great event to see on May 19, 2013 at the University of San Diego. It’s called America’s Finest. You will see over 300 young people graduate from Reality Changers. They attend high schools all over the county and this is THE big event for these RC students at the end of the year. It’s only $10 to attend the ceremony. This is even more amazing when you consider that Chris Yanov started Reality Changers with $300 and four students over a decade ago. At this point all the Reality Changers students collectively have earned over $10 Million in scholarships.

Come on down!

Carbon Nation

15 Apr

You’ve probably seen quotes by Edmund Burke and didn’t notice that he was the person being quoted.

This is one of the most thought-provoking motivational quotes if you give it time to sink in.

It’s not the most beautiful quote or the most memorable or entertaining or fun, but it could be one of the most important quotes ever if you want to get things done.

“Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.”
― Edmund Burke

I just got done watching “Carbon Nation” on my laptop and Kindle Fire and this movie gives me great hope about what we can do about making our neighborhoods, communities, cities, counties, nations and the world a more clean, natural and sustainable place.

Edmund Burke’s quote comes at the end of the movie.

If you have Amazon Prime you can watch it at no cost except your energy usage.

Watch it now!

Thinking About Neighborhood

8 Apr

My guess is that nearly everyone wants their neighborhood to be a great neighborhood, no matter how they define great neighborhood. There is more than one way to define neighborhood and neighbor.

We can also have neighborly connections with people who don’t live quite so close. Andre Stevens-Thomas is one of those people with whom I have a growing “neighbor” connection even though he doesn’t live in San Marcos.

He and I got together months ago and discussed a book I mentioned in an earlier post. That book is “In The Neighborhood” by Peter Lovenheim and right now you can get it on Kindle for under $6.00 – In The Neighborhood.

Andre is quite a musical talent and right now he’s working on an album and probably will be in the studio on and off for several months. Here’s his website:

He’s having lunch with me at Mr. Taco near Cal State San Marcos in a couple weeks.

Who else wants to get together with me for lunch?

Make Your Own Video

2 Apr

Making a video to post to Youtube isn’t that hard.

It helps to have a phone like my Samsung and it helps if you’ve practiced.

I stood in my pool yesterday and filmed this in one take.

This video is definitely not perfect, but I believe it works.

Not only is it part of this post, but I added it to Nuts & Bolts Neighborhoods permanently over on the right.

Happy Easter!

31 Mar

Here are links to sermons from Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, where my family will be attending the Easter service this morning, as well as Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church.

If you have read previous posts you’ll know that Solana Beach has been my home church for 17 years and RBC Presbyterian is where Neal Nybo, a wonderful former pastor from Solana Beach, now serves on staff.

Happy Easter to you and yours!

How Important Are Plants, Trees, Flowers, Shrubs & Weeds?

30 Mar

Some people are very concerned about what grows in your yard. I personally think that here in California we have our priorities a little out of whack when it comes to someone else’s yard. Here’s the unfortunate side of this phenomenon in nearby Encinitas, CA:
